Here Were The Three Things That Surprised Me the Most When First Arriving in China:
You can buy things everywhere. In the United States, we often have to get into our cars and drive for meals, groceries, bottled water, etc. In China, because the cities are so densely populated, there are shops selling everything from duck neck to firecrackers on every corner. If you’re looking for something you need, or even something you don’t need, you can find it quite easily in China.

After our flight landed in Shanghai, we enquired as to how to go to Suzhou from there.
We were misguided to go to shanghai Railway station and take a train to suzhou. Actually we learnt later there were regular busses plying from Shanghai Airport to Suzhou.
We took the bus from shanghai Airport to Shanghai Ry stn, which was a free ride. (1st surprise). Actually it would have been better if they charged us, then we would have changed some of our USD to Chinese currency at the airport money exchange.
The shanghai Ry stn, booking hall was huge and had serpentine queues in front of around 10 odd booking counters. It was 2nd surprise as to why so many people are buying paper tickets at the counters instead of booking online, with China having more mobile phones and better internet than India.
Then we went to a counter which had a board in English, denoting it is a counter for foreigners. 3rd Surprise was there were around 10 local people standing already in the queue, who were 100% Chinese. We gestured to the booking clerk, while standing at the back of the queue, by wildly waving our passports to indicate that we are foreigners. The booking clerk simply ignored us. When finally it was our turn, the clerk told us there are no seats in trains to suzhou for the next 3 days, as it is some festival season.
Dragging our luggage out of the ry stn, we came on to the main road trying to hail taxis. Nobody stopped, even the ones which had no passengers. We tried to get info from few pedestrians who did not make out what we wanted. After half an hour a kind cabman stopped near us. We told Suzhou, he replied by asking ‘Chuzhou?’. We wanted to first get in, instead of clarifying further. He waved us in. After driving for sometime he suddenly stopped at a fuelling station at a place looking like outskirts. He got out of the car and gestured us to be seated in the cab. He was trying to stop vehicles travelling on the highway. After sometime he was successful and sopped an SUV. He transferred us into that car. He refused to take money from us, when we offered around 20 USD.
The driver of the SUV conversed with us in English. He told us that the cab we boarded is limited to shanghai city and hence he transferred us to his SUV. We told him we wanted to go to Hotel Suzhou and showed him our printout of booking. com. He said he makes regular trips to shanghai and suzhou to transfer industrial products and machinery spares to his customers. It was around 8:30 pm when he dropped us at the hotel and refused to accept any money. We thanked him and went up the hotel lobby using the lift. The lobby was manned (sic) by 3 young women. We showed our copy of booking. The website Booking.com: allows booking without prior payment and customer is supposed to pay at the time of checkin.
The reception refused to accept in USD asked to pay in chinese currency. As we didn’t have any we opted to swipe the card. After swiping, the machine asked to enter 6 digit pin, In India we have only 4 digit pin. When I keyed in my 4 digit pin the transaction was declined. We told them we will convert our USD in the morning at an exchange and pay up. They did not agree, By this time we both were hungry and saw a restaurant right across the road. We requested the reception to keep our bags and went down to the restaurant. We told the cash counter clerk at the restaurant that we have only USD and will try their swipe machine for 1 yuan test payment. This time I keyed in my 4 digit pin followed by 2 zeros to make it a 6 digit pin. Surprise the trans was successful.

The hotel had buffet breakfast served to the guests daily. It had around 4 dishes bread and milk. We ate only one dish that is veg noodles. Though there was a kheer like dish we never ventured. we can''''''''''''''''t ask the hotel staff as they don''''''''''''''''t understand our English. On the second day we were discussing loudly whether the kheer like dish is vegetarian or not, a surprising voice in English saying “ it is vegetarian” came from behind us, from a chinese gentleman. we came to know that he is a guest in our hotel. In China it is rare to hear English. But you will hear it all of a sudden and from unexpected persons.
A female municipal worker greeted us in English and asked us whether we are from India. She helped us in shopping. While in swanky shops and mini and micro skirt wearing sales persons do not understand wee bit of English.
We went to Suzhou museum and Humble Administrators Garden, both of which were worth seeing. All of these places we went by walking taking help from Google maps.
Another surprise was the lights on highway. All along the highway between Suzhou and shanghai there are street lights, which I have never seen anywhere including USA and Europe, where the street lights are limited to the city part of the highway.
All in all I enjoyed my first China trip except for the food part and language barrier.

Everything surprised me about China, but I’ll list a few specifics.
I first went to China back in 2010, and I have been in and out of the country more times than I can count. Everything about China is the opposite of what I original thought it was going to be prior to the first time I went.
Since 2010, I have visited just about every part of China. I’ve been to all cities in Tier 1–4, I’ve been to Tier 5 cities, I’ve been to many many villages too.
Other Foreigners. I’ve been to all the tourist cities, in fact I own apartments in some of them, even when I don’t always stay there. So I’ve come across many other foreigners over the years who visit China, or live there. Some are really nice, but I find a lot of other foreigners visiting China to be extremely rude, and disrespectful to the Chinese culture. Even though everyone is nice to them, they say hurtful things in English and complain about China constantly.

Culture. The overall culture practices of China surprised me. With over 5000 years of history and traditions. I’ve learned everything about the do’s and don’ts in China. From not sticking chopsticks straight up in rice, to lucky number 8. From using an umbrella to block the sun and create shade outside to not giving a clock as a gift. China culture is so detailed, so fascinating, more than I thought it would be.
People. Majority of all my experience in China are very positive, everyone in China is very friendly. Much can be attested to the fact that I am a foreigner, and a white foreigner at that. China has what is called positive discrimination towards white foreigners. Everywhere you go you are treated very politely. Canadians are also treated much much better than Americans. China is a very welcoming country to all tourists from abroad.
Food. Food on it’s own could be it’s own thing, every region in China has a different style of Chinese cuisine that is different then other regions. Food in China is just amazing. What surprised me about food was just how good and tasty it is. I was not expecting to fall in love with Chinese cuisine. Eating is one of my favorite things to do in China. I have collected over 12,000 photos of my own of dishes I have ate in China since 2010. Everything from green beans and minced pork, to hot pot, to pig brain, and every type of street food you can imagine.
Beauty. The sheer beauty of China was a surprise. China in my opinion, and the opinion of most world travelers is that China is the most beautiful country in the whole world. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but when the majority of qualified people say that China is the most beautiful country in the world, then it probably is.

What surprised me most when I first arrived to China was how everyone stared at me. My impression was that they had never seen foreigners before and they had a stern look on their face…as if they hated me! After living in the city sometime I came to know that they did not hate me, but were curious and interested in the way foreigners looked. Now Beijing and Shanghai being more international cities there are less people staring.

There are many things in China that amaze me – Chinese architecture, skylines, traffic management, endless Chinese menu, ease of using technology, etc. But to be specific with the question the #FIRST thing that astonishes me was the height of Chinese people. Being a foreigner, I was having a perception that Chinese are petite in stature. Though, they are not.

After resigning from my former position at a local bank, I travelled to Shanghai and stayed there for a month to experience a different cultural experience. I have never been to China before. I chose China because I wanted to be in a non-English speaking country.
The first thing that surprised me was.. literally everything is cashless. Yeah I am well aware about Wechat pay and Alipay but I didn’t expect that exchanging cash for service/goods has become a rare sight. Even the dodgiest street food stalls don’t accept cash. I once made payment using cash before I activated my Wechat Pay, the laoban (store keeper) had to go find his cash drawer key. Clearly nobody has made cash payment for quite some time
You have an app for everything. Literally. Food, clothes, paying rent, water, charity, uh everything can be done through apps.

While living in India I have not thought In this way that providing public toilet facility is government responsibility. After coming to China now I have realized how backward our society is, living in slums eating junk foods inhaling polluted air it is quite normal India.
I feel pity on those indians who here on Quora try to compare India with China. I would say to all of them that even poor people of china have better living standard than the middle class of India.
